ASTA issued a letter to Tom Harkin, Chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, in November 2019 regarding concerns with the Senators Tester and Hagan amendment from the "Food Safety Modernization Act" exempting small entities.

Multi-Industry Letter to RFK Jr. Opposing Cuts to Foodborne Illness Surveillance Program Funding
In November 2025, ASTA signed a Safe Food Coalition letter requesting that Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kennedy fully fund the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet), the only active foodborne illness surveillance network in the U.S., in response to proposed cuts to the program. The letter was co-signed by both trade associations and public health organizations concerned with this reduction in capacity on active foodborne illness surveillance.

ASTA issued comments to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2004 regarding prior notice of imported food under the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002.
