ASTA Comments on FDA's Allergen Draft Guidance
ASTA submitted comments to the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) in August 2022 in response and support of the FDA's Draft Guidance for FDA Staff and Stakeholders: Evaluating the Public Health Importance of Food Allergens Other Than the Major Food Allergens Listed in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Ac. ASTA comments note that this Draft Guidance provides a science-based framework for protecting public health with respect to allergen issues.

ASTA Comments on FDA Request for Information on Gluten Labeling and Cross-Contact in Packaged Foods
In April 2026, ASTA submitted comments in response to the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) request for information (RFI) on labeling and cross-contact of gluten in packaged foods, which specifically referenced ingredients that can be declared using collective terms, such as spices. ASTA's comments highlight that no spices inherently contain gluten, note that FDA should take a scientific, risk-based approach to unintended gluten presence, and express support for consistency with existing FDA requirements and harmonization with internal standards for gluten labeling.
ASTA Comments on FDA's Post-Market Assessment of Chemicals in Food
In January 2025, ASTA submitted comments to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on its discussion paper on the development of an enhanced systematic process for the post-market assessment of chemicals in food. ASTA's comment note that environmental contaminants are unique and should be addressed using a separate or modified approach to that used for intentionally added chemicals. The comments also call for the development of additional guidance to assist industry with setting appropriate thresholds for contaminants.
