ASTA Comments on EPA's Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on EtO Emissions

This document is a letter submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in response to questions raised by the agency on the use of ETO in the reconditioning of spices. The document also comments on EPA's proposed phase out of ETO on different groups of spices.

ASTA provided comments to the Spices Board of India in May 2024 highlighting the regulatory acceptance of EtO as a fumigant in the U.S., as well as the importance of EtO as a food safety tool. The comments note that both the U.S. FDA and U.S. EPA have determined that residues of EtO in spices are safe for consumption.
