ASTA Again Urges White House Intervention in USMX-ILA Contract Dispute
Read this article about the master contract negotiation for all East and Gulf Coast ports that expires at the end of the month.
Importers are patiently waiting for a resolution in the negotiation between the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) and the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) regarding the master contract for all East and Gulf Coast ports that expires at the end of the month. As previously reported, the ILA has refused an extension of the contract or any potential mediation by the federal government, with reports indicating that they are steadfast in seeking up to an 80% increase in wages. The ILA held its Wage Committee meetings earlier this month without USMX participation, where union delegates unanimously voted for an October 1 strike. Late last week, ASTA and other industry associations sent a follow-up letter to President Biden once again requesting the establishment of an intermediary to resume negotiations and prevent severe disruptions to the U.S. supply chain.
