FDA Activities: Opiate Alkaloids and Poppy Seeds
This was part of a panel and discussion on Emerging Chemical Contaminants at the 2023 Regulatory Workshop held in Washington, DC. New and evolving challenges related to chemical contaminants continue to emerge in the spice industry. Panelists discussed issues related to a variety of chemical contaminants, including per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), mycotoxins, mineral oil-saturated hydrocarbons, and aromatic hydrocarbons (MOSH/MOAH), opiate alkaloids, pesticides, and how the spice industry can work to address them. This slide presentation on opiate alkaloids in poppy seeds was provided by Katherine Vierk, FDA.
