Efforts to Eliminate Lead-Adulteration in Spices

At the 2025 ASTA Annual Meeting & Exhibits held on April 9th in Savannah, Georgia, Lavanya Nambiar, Program Manager for Asia at Pure Earth, presented an overview of the ASTA–Pure Earth Partnership. Her session highlighted the collaborative efforts supported by an ASTA grant to address lead adulteration in spices, with a particular focus on Bihar, a known hotspot for such contamination. The initiative is part of a broader, three-year intervention aimed at reducing spice adulteration across the North Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. Nambiar emphasized the significance of this partnership in promoting safer spice production and protecting public health through targeted, community-based actions.
