ASTA Feedback to GAO on FDA Implementation of Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)
ASTA was contacted in August 2024 by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), which was seeking to obtain perspectives from various food safety stakeholders on FDA's implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). In collaboration with ASTA members and the association's General Counsel, ASTA provided the following feedback on the Preventive Controls for Human Foods Rule (Section 103), Sanitary Transportation Rule (Section 111), and the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (Section 301).

ASTA Comments on FSMA Focused Mitigation Strategies for Food Defense and Intentional Adulteration
ASTA issued comments to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in June 2014 regarding the FDA's proposed rule on Focused Mitigation Strategies to Protect Food Against Intentional Adulteration. Comments addressed the joint role to protect public health and the food supply, vulnerability assessments, key activity types, mitigation strategies, confidentiality of FDPs, proposed exemptions based on business size, economically motivated adulteration, and recommended a reproposal.
ASTA Comments on FDA's Proposed High-Risk Designation for Tracing
ASTA issued a comment to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2014 regarding the designation of high-risk foods for tracing in response to the request for information and scientific data on the FDA's draft model for designating high-risk foods for tracing as part of its implementation of Section 204 of the FSMA.
