ASTA Comments on FDA's Appendix 1
ASTA submitted comments to the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) in September 2022 regarding the FDA's “Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food; Draft Guidance for Industry,” specifically focusing on the section of this document entitled “Appendix 1: Potential Hazards for Foods and Processes”. ASTA comments raise issues with the scientific basis for certain hazards in spices and seasonings, as well as the misuse of Appendix 1 in food safety inspections.

ASTA Feedback to GAO on FDA Implementation of Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)
ASTA was contacted in August 2024 by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), which was seeking to obtain perspectives from various food safety stakeholders on FDA's implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). In collaboration with ASTA members and the association's General Counsel, ASTA provided the following feedback on the Preventive Controls for Human Foods Rule (Section 103), Sanitary Transportation Rule (Section 111), and the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (Section 301).
