2023 Regulatory Presentation: Lead in Crops, Herbs and Spices

This presentation was part of a panel on Heavy Metal Mitigation Strategies at the 2023 Regulatory Workshop held in Washington, DC. Panelists discussed ongoing efforts to prevent the contamination of spices with lead, including problems related to the potential for lead-based dyes to be added to spices in the local markets of certain origin countries, research on consumer exposure to lead from spices in the U.S., and potential environmental mitigation strategies to reduce heavy metal levels in spices. This slide presentation was provided by Paul Römkens & René Rietra, Wageningen University, on the science available to mitigate lead uptake during growing crops.
